The impact of COVID-19 on mobility: people’s use of transport one year after the start of the pandemic

Neuchâtel, 26.10.2021 - At the start of 2021, just under a year after the beginning of the pandemic and roughly in the period of the second lockdown, on average almost a third fewer kilometres were covered per person than immediately before the first wave of infections. A particularly sharp decline was seen in public transport distances with a reduction of 52%. Motorised individual transport fell considerably less at –27%. Distances covered on foot and by bike saw hardly any difference. These figures are from a special analysis of data from the Mobility and Transport Microcensus, produced jointly by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) and the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE).
