Sustainable development

Sustainable development is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and has been guided by the Federal Council's Sustainable Development Strategy since 1997. The aim is to strike a balance among economic, social and environmental interests and to promote consistent policies at federal level.

The strategy is based on the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The federal government has set three priorities: sustainable consumption and production, climate/energy/biodiversity, and equal opportunities and social cohesion. The strategy serves to coordinate policy areas, sets strategic goals for 2030, and builds on existing measures. The Federal Council calls on the cantons, municipalities, business, science, civil society, and the population to work together to achieve the sustainability goals.

2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The Agenda represents the synthesis of the UN conferences on sustainable development of 1992, 2002, and 2012, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which lapsed at the end of 2015.

2030 Sustainable Development Strategy

In its 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy (2030 SDS), the Federal Council outlines the priorities it intends to set to implement the 2030 Agenda in Switzerland.
